We tested the Core i7-4790K in an Asus Z97-Pro motherboard with a SilverStone Argon AR03 air cooler. At its stock speeds, it scored 124 overall in our multimedia benchmarks, which perform a number of intensive desktop tasks such as image processing, video encoding and playing back HD video while performing other intensive tasks. This is a 14-point increase on the Core i7-4770K's result of 110 overall in the same motherboard. The processor's improved heat dissipation seems to be effective, as all four cores ran at a solid 4GHz in the multitasking section of our benchmarks.
Those modifications come together, enabling a replacement for Core i7-4770K that drops into the same LGA 1150 interface. Vital specifications are very much similar; you get four physical cores able to address eight threads through HT technology, 8 MB of shared L3 cache, DDR3 memory support that officially tops out at 1600 MT/s, the same old HD Graphics 4600 engine, and a 16-lane PCI Express 3.0 controller.
Faster clock speed: The Core i7-4790K runs at a 4GHz base clock, with a 4.4GHz Turbo Mode. That's an increase of 15 percent over the Intel Core i7-4770K's 3.5GHz base/3.9GHz Turbo clock speed, and since CPU performance scales nearly linear with clock speed improvements, it means benchmark results will pick up an extra 10- to 15-percent performance on the newer core.
One last parting shot: I know there aren't a ton of comparison numbers in today's charts. I really wanted the face-off to be between Core i7-4790K and -4770K using our latest benchmark versions. But paging back through some of the tests that haven't changed in Intel Core i7-4960X Review: Ivy Bridge-E, Benchmarked, it's worth noting that Core i7-4790K, even overclocked, trades blows with the Core i7-3930K at its stock clock rate in most threaded benchmarks (Haswell obviously smokes Sandy Bridge-E in tests that run on one core). I know that was a $600-something processor two-and-a-half years ago, but it sure holds up well. You have to be happy as an enthusiast if you're still sitting on a tuned -3930K.
The big news in the specifications is that the i7-4790K is clocked much higher than was previously expected. The i7-4770K, its predecessor, was rated at a 3.5 GHz base frequency and offered a turbo speed for single core workloads of 3.9 GHz. The new i7-4790K will come with a 4.0 GHz base frequency (Intel likes to point out this is their first commercial quad-core CPU with a 4.0 GHz base clock) which offers a 4.4 GHz Turbo Mode. An extra 14% frequency for a similar price is not to be sniffed at although Intel does quote the TDP rising from 84W to 88W.
